Congress Park Homes for Sale
Congress Park was originally platted as Capitol Heights in the late 1880's and the term "Congress Park" was not used extensively until the 1970's. However, General William Larimer and his son staked out a 120 acre cemetery called Mount Prospect as early as 1859, a full year before the treaty was signed with the Arapahoe tribe. However, the cemetery was so far from the city that it soon fell into disrepair. In 1890 Senator Teller convinced Congress to authorize changing the cemetery into a park. This led to the infamous and gruesome excavation that left behind as many as 5000 souls.
The current day Congress Park neighborhood is bordered on the north by Colfax Ave, on the east by Colorado Blvd., on the south by 6th Avenue and on the west by York Street. Development began in the northwest corner and progressed to the southeast corner over a period of nearly 30 years. The architectural styles can be clearly seen as one walks through the neighborhood from NW to SE, starting with Queen Anne and Victorian mansions, blending into large Denver Square's and finally ending in WWI, working class Bungalows.
Today, the Congress Park homes enjoy a fantastic location and are within walking distance of almost all modern amenities which include an outdoor pool, large children's playground, two soccer pitches, a baseball field, a few basketball courts and eight tennis courts. There is also a thriving retail and restaurant strip along 12th Ave, not to mention the new Tattered Cover Bookstore and other fine dining restaurants along Colfax Ave. The NE anchor for the neighborhood is the award winning National Jewish Medical and Research Center.
